How to Use PayPal With Any Music Site

Sometimes, when you find some nice mp3 music, a rare bootleg album, or a just released single of your favorite artist the only problem you might have is secure and reliable payment method. Currently, not all websites selling cheap and legal mp3 music can offer PayPal payments - but cry no more - there's an old trick how to use your PayPal account to pay for mp3 music.

We have discussed it back in 2008 and now I only wanted to add that this option has two main advantages:
1. You don't have to disclose your credit card details (as you are only using PayPal details);
2. The payments are made using PayPal gateways so you can rely on their security and reliability.

Downloading Music to iPod and iPhones

Owners of iPhones and iPods know about prices at iTunes. It is really too expensive to buy mp3 from iTunes. This is where LegalSounds comes into play. You can download music for just 9¢ per track from the site. Frankly speaking, that’s quite a saving, when iTunes charges $0.99 per song.

Great news! But how do you get the music to your device?

If you’re anything like me, it’s all very confusing to start with! But don’t worry, if you do need a bit of help, or have no idea where to start, it’s not as tough as you think.

This guide will cover two things; getting the the music from LegalSounds to your PC and getting the music from your PC to your iPod.

Downloading from LegalSounds
Downloading music from LegalSounds is very easy. Once you’re registered and have some money on your account, you just need to start finding some music you want to download.

  1. Find an album, or track, you want to download.
  2. Tick the check box next track you want, of if you want the whole album, click ‘Select All’.
  3. Once the tracks or album you want are checked, click ‘Buy Selected’.
  4. You will be asked to confirm that you want to download the music and the amount that will be deducted from your account. Click OK to accept and buy the music.
  5. You will see ‘Purchase Succeeded’ and instructions on how to get the song to your PC. To do this, click ‘My Downloads’ on the ‘Purchase Succeeded’ page. (You can also get to ‘My Downloads’ at the very top of the site).
  6. ‘My Downloads’ contains all the music you have purchased from LegalSounds. You now need to download the tracks to your PC so you can use them. The ‘My Downloads’ screen has full instructions on how to do this, but if you need help, keep reading.
  7. Find the music you want to download. If you want to download tracks, right-click on the name of the track, if you want the whole album, right click on the name of the album.
  8. Click ‘Save Target As’ or ‘Save Link As’ and select a location. You can save your music wherever you want on your PC.
  9. If you want the music to go to your iTunes library, the best place to save the file is the iTunes folder, which is inside your ‘My Music’ folder.
  10. Navigate to this, if you’re using the latest version of iTunes, inside the iTunes folder will be another, ‘iTunes Media’.
  11. Inside there will be yet another folder called ‘Automatically Add to iTunes’.
  12. Save all your LegalSounds music here and iTunes will do the rest. It will add any music to your iTunes library that you put into that folder.

Hopefully all that will make sense! Once you have the music in your iTunes library, you can do what you want with it. To get the music to your iPod, plug in your iPod and you can then drag the songs across to it, ready for you to take with you anywhere you go.

Digging Cheap Legal MP3 Music

Hooray! I've found yet another website providing cheap and legal mp3 music download. Name of the service stands for Sound Klondike - it is a gold mine for those searching for cheap and legal songs and albums.

Tracks cost $0.15 per track, but actual price may be even lower! Here's a trick - the service offers bonuses for deposits starting at $20. For example, if you add $50 to your account, you get a bonus $50 worth. That means that track now costs you only $0.075! The same applies if you add $20.

Website interface is very pleasant, and the database contains 1,500,000+ tracks orginized in a clean catalog!

And here's the main prize! After you register you get 2 (two) free songs! Seems like an interesting offer? Ready for a gold rush?

Does Number of Albums equals to Good Selection?

Do numbers really matter? When it comes to mp3 websites, do the number of albums a music store claims to offer corresponds with the quality of the music selection? One of the readers did a small research with a band I'd never heard of, the "Flying Burrito Brothers", to find this out - with interesting results.

He decided to take a look and see just which sites even offer their albums, and which sites don't. You should take into account that using a single band as the deciding factor about the quality of the catalog on a website isn't really fair; however, I think it's a good approach - and it should probably be done regularly. In fact, if enough comparisons are done using semi-obscure artists, I believe it will be easier to identify the sites that are mainly interested in stocking mainstream music (like Linkin Park, or Madonna) rather than the less well-known (like Adrian Legg, or Live).

A quick Wikipedia check shows that the Flying Burrito Brothers have 10 regular albums, 8 live albums, and 4 compilation albums. When searching, the aouthor decided to disallow individual tracks on other compilations (like a country-western CD with a single track of theirs). Let's see how all of these sites stack up against each other:

Site Site Albums Burrito Brothers
Albums
Burrito Brothers
Live
Burrito Brothers
Compilations
LegalSounds
?? 0 0 0
JustMusicStore 159,890 0 0 0
MP3Fiesta 65,097 5 4 1
MP3Sugar 49,866 0 0 0
GoMusic
35,781 2 0 0
iSound
59,890 0 0 0
MP3Search 40,313 2 0 0
MP3Sale 86,029 0 0 1
MP3Stor 76,396 3 0 0
MP3Ninja ?? 0 0 0
Iomoio
??
1 0
0

At least, it is clear that the winner here is MP3Fiesta. Surprisingly though, JustMusicStore (with it's whopping 160,000 albums) didn't have a single track by them - and neither did MP3Ninja or iSound.

LegalSounds and MP3Sugar both had at least one track, but no albums.

He also conducted a second search using the artist "Adrian Legg", and came up with far fewer results: only LegalSounds and MP3Sale had any albums by him at all; the rest came up negative.

"Who cares about these guys that I've never even heard of before?" you might be wondering. I suppose the point is this: if you are interested in obscure artists or albums, simply going for the music provider with the largest number in the "Albums" category might not be the way to go. You'll certainly want to do a search ahead of time if you need to get your Flying Burrito Brothers fix.

Thanks to Rob for the researches. We will continue with this exciting activity and will keep you updated.

Qtrax announced a deal big labels haven't signed

The executives behind a new music service called Qtrax wanted to get the industry talking. They did -- for the wrong reasons.

Brilliant Technologies Corp., the publicly traded parent company of Qtrax, said Sunday that it had opened the first Napster-like network to feature free music from the four major record labels with their permission. The New York company launched the service during a music-industry conference in Cannes, France, with lavish events including a Qtrax-funded performance by singer James Blunt.

Widespread news coverage sent 61,000 users an hour to the site of Qtrax, which had been working on the file-sharing system for years.

But they came away disappointed: The site didn't work because, although the big four labels had been in negotiations with Qtrax, none said they had actually signed deals authorizing the use of their music.

The premature announcement stunned the music industry and provoked comparisons to dot-com disasters at the turn of the century, when some companies worked harder at throwing good parties than making good products.

"When you launch a service billed as the first legal peer-to-peer, it sets up expectations," said former EMI Group digital executive Ted Cohen, who moderated a panel discussion in Cannes with Qtrax Chief Executive Allan Klepfisz. "It's going to be tough for them to recover from this."

Qtrax kept up appearances as the Midem conference continued Monday. Rapper LL Cool J, a guest of the company, performed in the evening. Klepfisz said in a telephone interview that the labels were overreacting in refusing to let their music be used on his site.

"We got nods to go ahead with the service Friday night," Klepfisz said. "There's been a misunderstanding."

Klepfisz said he thought he had gotten close enough to final deals to proceed. His lieutenant for technology said some of the more major innovations, such as allowing users to move downloaded songs onto portable devices, had been put off for a few weeks at the labels' insistence.

Qtrax had built momentum last week, giving demonstrations and granting interviews to reporters on condition that no articles appear before Saturday night. Spokesmen for the labels, assuming deals were near, didn't dissuade reporters from the story, which appeared across the Web and in several newspapers, including some early copies of The Times on Monday, before the labels' complaints came to light.

Qtrax executives issued a news release Saturday night claiming they had all labels on board, then spent Sunday trying to cajole them into providing content even though the deals weren't signed, according to sources at two labels. That didn't work. Warner Music Group, which is publicly traded, was the first of the four labels to tell reporters it had reached no agreement.

Qtrax said Monday that it would delay the service until it could get contracts finalized.

Label executives, some of whom had agreed to support an earlier, less radical, version of the system for ad-supported downloads, said they were either still negotiating with Qtrax or were willing to do so.

But they marveled at the company's willingness to officially proclaim something that wasn't there. Qtrax even released supportive quotes from record-label executives that had been agreed upon more than a year before and that referred to different incarnations of the service.

Brilliant Technologies shares set a 52-week high of 9.2 cents Friday in heavy over-the-counter trading before any official announcement. But trading volume tripled Monday and the share price plunged to 5 cents, cutting the stock's market value to about $35 million.

That market value drop of more than $25 million should be enough to trigger a shareholder class-action lawsuit alleging fraud, Columbia University securities law expert John Coffee said.

"There will predictably be some litigation," Coffee said. "There's a good chance the SEC may take action too."

A spokesman for the Securities and Exchange Commission said the agency couldn't comment on specific companies. He noted that such "pink sheet" stocks as Brilliant Technologies' face much less scrutiny than companies trading on major exchanges.

Qtrax spokesman Justin Kazmark declined to comment on the applicability of securities laws forbidding false material statements.

He also declined to comment on estimates by those at Midem that the company had spent $1 million on the launch events, including the performances by Blunt and LL Cool J.

How to Use PayPal With Any Music Site

Want to use PayPal at MP3Fiesta, Soundike, LegalSounds, or other music sites? While the majority of them don't accept PayPal directly, there is a lesser known feature of PayPal that will let you purchase music from all of these sites. It's really pretty simple, and is a great option for those who don't feel confident giving out their credit card information. Read on for a step-by-step instructions that will have you downloading music in minutes using your PayPal account.
PayPal has an often overlooked feature called the "PayPal Plug-In" that they provide as a free download directly from the PayPal website. You'll have to install this browser toolbar from PayPal in order to use this tool. After downloading and installation, the plug-in will provide you with a menu that allows you to create prepaid Mastercard with a set limit. This 'generated' credit card can then be used to purchase items anywhere where Mastercard is accepted, and is done safely - the card limit is set by you. This is great for making purchases online without giving out the credit card information of a "real" credit card.
Step 1 - Installation of the PayPal Toolbar
After logging into your PayPal account, look on the left side of the screen. There should be a link titled "PayPal Plugin" (circled in red in the image below).

After clicking the link, you will be taken to the download screen (here is the URL leading directly to the download page) Click on the download link circled in the image below to download the toolbar (select "Run" after it downloads to install it).

After Running the Plug-In setup program you'll have a new PayPal button in your browser toolbar (Internet Explorer or Firefox both work with this Plug-In).

Step 2 - Generate a Mastercard Safely

Click on "Generate Secure Card" on the PayPal toolbar menu.

If you haven't done it already, there might be some additional steps you'll need to do to enable 'Secure Cards' (you must have a verified address, etc). Once you've generated a Mastercard with an amount on it you feel comfortable with, you can then use this card in the following step.

Step 3 - Signup and Download

While your newly generated Mastercard should work basically anywhere, it has been reported that it will work at least on the following sites:

Other Notes
Unfortunately for the Europeans (and others around the world), it appears that this only works for those living in the USA. Downloading the toolbar and installing it but then signing in with an account outside of the USA doesn't seem to work either (you aren't even able to download the toolbar if you have a foreign account). If the status of this changes, it will be posted here.
If anyone has any good (or bad) experiences using this method, please post them in the comments section below.

CDT Top-30 MP3 sites list

CDT issued Music Download Warning List with 30 so-called illegal sites offering music downloading services. Very good PR for the mentioned sites! I wonder if the owners paid CDT for that fart.

They forgot www.mp3fiesta.com, www.mp3sale.ru and several other sites providing cheap and legal mp3 music to download

Claims to be rated as "#1 Music Download Website" on NBC, CNN, MTV, AOL, and Google.
